Tips for Entertaining a Large Crowd

Have you volunteered to host a large function in your home? You’re either thrilled at the prospect or a bundle of nerves. If you’re an experienced host or have an unlimited budget, you’re in great shape. Enjoy the party. If you’re a novice, you might already be sweating.  This is a case where you do need to sweat the detail, and sweat them well in advance. Professional event planner and caterers all agree that the key to any successful event is advanced planning.  When both the big issues and minute have been addressed, you’re many more times likely to not only have a successful event, but you’re more apt to enjoy yourself as well. Follow these basic recommendations from the professional event planners and caterers to jump start the planning for the large function in your home. There’s no time like the present to get started. Whether you’re a list taker using an old fashioned pen and paper, or if you’re more comfortable with digital notes – it’s launch time!

The first steps are to determine your budget and guest list. For a casual event it’s perfectly acceptable to send eVites to those on the guest list. There’s the added advantage of knowing when they opened the eVite and most websites have a dashboard that keeps a tally of those attending, those that have declined and those from whom you’re awaiting a response. When planning your menu, stick to your budget, and keep in mind that guests will not be seated at a table. Heavy sauces, soups would be less than practical. You don’t need to be a gourmet chef to prepare a meal for a large crowd. The key is to prepare as much in advance as possible. Lasagna, fresh salad and warm bread are always crowd pleasers and can be made well in advance.

The easiest way to serve a large crowd is by setting up a buffet in the dining room. Place half the plates on either end of the buffet to allow guests to serve themselves from either side.  Place a bouquet of flowers in the center of the buffet table. Roll flatware in napkins for guests to easily retrieve. Set the buffet up several days prior to the event. Place serving platters around the buffet to ensure sufficient space prior to the evening of the event.

Finally, set your favorite music play list and prepare to welcome your guests with either an alcoholic or non-alcoholic drink. Enjoy a lovely evening with your guests. You’ve made all the preparations in advance and certainly deserve to enjoy yourself!
